Touring Scenic Route 66 and Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon North Rim LodgeMotorcycle Tours through any of our Nations’ most scenic places are always adventurous and highly rewarding. Our motorcycle tour of Historic Route 66 and the Grand Canyon this past October was no exception. With only four days to ride our itinerary was ambitious. We hoped to cover a lot of ground and experience as much of the glorious Desert Southwest as possible. The plan was as follows:

  • Day 1: Salt Lake to Kingman, AZ via Las Vegas, Boulder City, Lake Mead
  • Day 2: Kingman, AZ to North Rim Grand Canyon via Route 66, Williams, South Rim, Jacob Lake
  • Day 3: North Rim Grand Canyon to Duck Creek, UT via Jacob Lake, AZ, Kanab, UT
  • Day 4: Duck Creek, UT to Salt Lake via Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Torrey, Manti

Utah Highway 12With over 500 miles to ride, our first day was to begin before sunrise. We arrived in St. George at lunch time and enjoyed a nice visit and a good meal at Five Guys. My parents were living there at the time so we were able to meet them for about an hour over some burgers and fries. Whenever one of my motorcycle adventure tours happens to take me near friends or family, I always try to manage a brief rendezvous. “Road reunions” always lend another welcome aspect to any motorcycle adventure tour and this was no exception. We then burned down into Las Vegas, through Boulder City, NV., over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead then finally into Kingman, AZ. This was a good but long day in the saddle and we were ready for our comfortable K.O.A. Kabin, a hot shower and a tasty campstove meal.

Williams, AZ Historic Route 66Our second day was more relaxed and ohhhh so beautiful. We picked up Historic Route 66 in Kingman. The 100 mile stretch eastward through Hackberry, Peach Springs, Seligman and Williams is a great two lane highway through the past. These historic places are fun to see today as they have tried to keep the nostalgia alive. Then just 60 miles straight north through the Kaibab Nat’l Forest is the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon adventure motorcycle touring is some of the most rewarding and spectacular riding any adventurer could ask for. This country is world famous for good reason! What better way to immerse oneself in this country than out in the open air atop a competent adventure motorcycle?

Sunset at Grand Canyon North Rim CampgroundAfter worshiping the view from the South Rim for a time, we began the final leg of the day toward the North Rim Campground. I could never get tired of riding this route! It’s almost too much beauty in one day, it’s definitely too much for words, you just have to see it to get it. After a brief sandwich and fuel up at Jacob Lake, we finally made our way to our campsite right ON the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This had to be one of the coolest campsites I have ever seen or imagined. From our campsite at over 8,000 feet we watched the sun set over the Grand Canyon and took tons of photos. A nice hot fireside dinner and a recounting of the day’s incredible journey took us well into the night.

Red CanyonDay three was also a stellar ride. We rode Scenic 89 through Kanab, Utah where we stopped to visit my Grandmother’s sister and her Husband. They are about 90 years old and are 100% legitimate old school western cowboy types. They have lived and ranched in Kanab since the fall of Rome and it’s great to visit with them and just listen to authentic stories of historic Southern Utah life. After cookies, diet cokes and some worthwhile conversation, we blazed north and settled in at Duck Creek, Utah. This too is highly scenic country and well worth checking out.

The final day was another long but very scenic one. We rode to Bryce Canyon Nat’l Park, then along the world renowned Utah Highway 12 to Torrey, Utah and Capitol Reef Nat’l Park. Not one mile was boring! This is God’s Country! Motorcycle adventure touring through many of America’s greatest treasures, is what some of us live and work for. There are few things as therapeutic and instructive as experiences like these. Visit www.adventureriderstouring.com and book a trip to remember.

Homeward Bound

Icefields Parkway South of Jasper, AlbertaAs is often the case with any of our motorcycle tours, the ride back towards home is as good as any other days we ride. Often times we try to make a loop rather than taking the same route going and coming. However, when the route takes us to roads as spectacular as these, it’s best to simply turn around at some point and experience them again. This provides the opportunity to take it all in again and sort of cement the adventure and the views in your mind as you see it from a new perspective… the opposite direction. This particular motorcycle tour is one that simply must be seen from both directions! The Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise to Jasper is approximately 150 miles long. Each and every one of those miles is full of fantastic scenery and views on BOTH sides of the highway. It would be a crime to ride it only once. A full understanding and appreciation of this region would take a lifetime of study.

The Best Two Days of an Epic Six

Tunnel Mountain Campground BanffThe skies are clear and the wind is calm as we set out early on day three. We can barely contain our excitement and feel no particular need to, as we eagerly load the bikes in anticipation of all the scenic country we are about to ride. This day is to include a gorgeous route out of Waterton Lakes National Park, into Pincher Creek, then north through Alberta’s Rocky Mountains Forest Res. towards Kananaskis Country and eventually into Kananaskis Country. If you ever have the opportunity to enjoy a motorcycle tour on Highway 541 and 40 from Longview (just south of Calgary on Highway 22) to Kananaskis and Canmore, DO IT!! This will be the first time I have used this route to get to Banff. (It will not be the last, sometimes a ride is so great you just don’t want it to end, this was such a road)

The Final Flight North for the 2011 Season

The two motorcycles....8:30 am in Pocatello for the hot chocolate. We planed to be rolling from the Salt Lake City area at 5:30 a.m. on day one in order to have the entire day to make our way to Kalispell, Montana. After a quick fuel stop we were jetting northbound on the Superslab towards Idaho. It’s always a joy to start any motorcycle tour by hitting the road before the sun rises. There is certain euphoria that comes along with low level flying along the Interstate as the glorious morning sun first begins to light the eastern sky. Even in the middle of summer it is nearly always cold in the wee hours of the morning as you approach and cross the Utah/Idaho border. This cool late September morning was no different, we blew right through Malad, Idaho with Pocatello slated as the first fuel stop on our flight plan. With about 150 chilly miles behind us we had earned our first hot chocolate.

Waterton Lake OverlookWe’ve all heard the expression in one form or another and it usually goes something like this — “there’s just no words to describe it”… or maybe, “words cannot convey”. If you know me, you know that I am not normally at a loss for words. I am however, finding it very difficult to formulate just how to go about sharing the experience of this last Canadian motorcycle adventure tour in such a way as to do justice to the natural wonders that are the Canadian Rockies.

Backyard Adventures: Wasatch Front Ride

By Adventure Riders · Comments (0)
Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Without fail each and every year, along the Wasatch Front September and October always provide some of the best adventure motorcycle tours of the year. There are so many fantastic scenic highways and twisty canyon roads to choose from here in Northern Utah. This past weekend I was craving to ride one of my old favorites, so I called a riding buddy who was all too happy to join in on the fun. When I don’t have the time to run away to Moab to visit Canyonlands National Park, or head south to tour Zion National Park, I am happy to stay local. In Northern Utah we have an abundant supply of day long motorcycle tour routes.
